Alexandria is one of the oldest cities in Virginia and located 7 miles south of Washington D.C. With a population of around 140,000 and its proximity to the capital, it provides a short commute for the many thousands of government workers and those in supporting industries across the region.

Where Washington D.C. and Arlington is for work, Alexandria is more about relaxation with a high concentration of restaurants, shops, theaters, galleries and antique stores, this is a place to come and unwind after a long day. Most of the neighborhoods are walkable and there are bus and metro links all around. That makes it ideal for commuting or relaxing.

Alexandria’s economy has some government and administrative elements as well as tourism and finance. The majority of residents commute into DC though.

Getting around Alexandria

Thanks to its proximity to Washington D.C. Alexandria and the surrounding areas are very well served by transport links. While not all links are in Alexandria itself, they will be easily accessible from there.

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) is the nearest airport in Arlington. Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) is 30 miles northwest and Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) is 40 miles northwest.

Alexandria Station has rail services from Virginia Railway Express and Amtrak. Metro is also present in Alexandria with the Blue and Yellow lines serving the city. The King Street Trolley also operates from King Street to the waterfront.

Traveling by car you have I-94, I-495, I-395, George Washington Memorial Parkway, State Route 7 and State Route 236.
